Is it better to go on a crammer course, or to book intensive A-Level Economics tutoring?

I (George Chantry) voice dictated every one of these articles to give my honest, transparent view on economics A-Level tutoring to answer parent questions, having worked in the tutoring industry for nine years. One of my clients asked me about the crammer course in the run-up to the A-Level Economics exams, because they were stressed about their exams, and they wanted to know what my opinion of the crammer course was. The client was about ten weeks from the actual A-Level Economics exam, and time was not on their side.

The problem with the crammer course

The problem with the crammer course is that, inevitably, it's a group course. It's going to be more like a class — a school class — where, of course, they can cover lots of material. But the question is: is this the right material for your child, to unlock your child's potential? They're directing the crammer course at twenty, thirty or forty students, in a group. If they are directing it at a group, it won't be tailored or personalised to the students' needs. Most students aren't in a position where they just need to cram the entire course ten weeks from the exam. Most students have specific, individualised weaknesses that tutoring really can help them confront and overcome.

"He was extremely clear in explaining concepts and filling in any gaps that our son hadn't grasped in group classes at Sixth Form College."

Why I was in favour of intensive tutoring

When the client asked me this question, I was firmly in favour of A-Level Economics intensive tutoring over the crammer course. The advantage of A-Level Economics intensive tutoring is that I can provide the student with huge numbers of individualised quizzes. We can look at all of their marked work, and we can test their specific answers against best-practice exam technique. This means that I'm going to be able to locate the specific weaknesses of a child and fix them. Therefore I think we'll get a higher return on investment compared to a generalised crammer course. The crammer course may not dig deeper into the exact problems that your child needs to fix with their A-Level Economics.

"He adapts his teaching to address my son's weak areas and he does not apply a blanket approach."
